That fact is–it was grossly presumptuous and downright insensitive for Pat Robertson to insinuate that Haiti’s history was the cause of Tuesday’s earthquake, especially while mothers, fathers, and children are still bleeding, buried alive under buildings or worse. Here’s what he said:
“They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it’s a deal.”
“That island of Hispaniola is one island. It is cut down the middle; on the one side is Haiti on the other is the Dominican Republic,” he said. “Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island.
The whole notion originates from the fact that Haiti reportedly made some sort of pact with the devil to gain their independence as a nation. No doubt that
has had some spiritual consequences and most would agree isn’t the best way to start your history as a nation. If you believe your bible God Himself is quick to own up to His own jealousy. “Thou shalt have no God before me.” There are always consequences for any nation that may does so and doing so can look many different ways-not just through a literal ritual. Whether its America, Uganda, Europe, Brazil or the Middle East–in the areas where we walk away from Wisdom-we bear the burden of that decision–like when we pass corrupt laws that don’t line up with the Kingdom. I imagine every nation has some spot in their history where they’ve done this not just Haiti.
So what of this earthquake then? Why all these rumblings of payback? Chickens coming home to roost-right? I disagree. I think there is another reason for natural disasters worldwide, not just in Haiti. There is a scripture in the bible that says:
Romans 8:19-20
19For [even the whole] creation (all nature) waits expectantly and longs earnestly for God’s sons to be made known [waits for the revealing, the disclosing of their sonship].
20For the creation (nature) was subjected to frailty (to futility, condemned to frustration), not because of some intentional fault on its part, but by the will of Him Who so subjected it–[yet] with the hope
I really believe that mother earth, God’s creation is crying out for Man (God’s image on earth) to stand up and take dominion. What do I mean? The earth was given to Adam(Man) as a gift. She is ours to steward, to manage, to love, to subdue, to cultivate. She was designed for the sons of God. She was created for us to rule over her as kings. Until we do, like a stomach that twists and turns in hunger she too groans in discomfort, longing for food only her masters can provide. I believe the earthquake was not God’s judgment on Haiti. Instead–I believe its the earth judging her owners–the sons and daughters of the most High God. She’s asking: Where are you? I need you! Govern me. Families need you. The Spirit of God needs your participation if He is to bring His government to earth as originally intended. We should always pray for those in leadership over Haiti and every other nation. But we must also come to terms with the leaders we are called to be as individuals. Kingship starts with us.
Robertson also said:
They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to god and out of this tragedy I’m optimistic something good may come. But right now we are helping the suffering people and the suffering is unimaginable.”
I had to address just one last thing. As it relates to Pagan or Devil Worship. If Haiti’s past is dark, is America’s any brighter? Is Haiti cursed for her pact but America not for sanctioning abortion? oops. Where do you draw the line? Every nation under the sun could stand to repent for her sin. Every nation. Each one has chosen a kingdom other than the one she was born to serve and obey at least once….(yes, I’m being sarcastic). So, the question remains: could Haiti’s sin have invited an earthquake? Did New Orleans’ sin invite Katrina? Did Asia the tsunami? Perhaps on some level it did but I think the church, corrupt government, etc. must share that responsibility. Ultimately God knows that answer-not me. Perhaps our failure to demonstrate the love, compassion and service of God in our families, communities, cities, nations and world has invited that dis-ease beneath the earth and above the sea. Perhaps our failure to submit to God’s rule has opened us all up to more than just earthquakes and tornadoes but sickness, poverty, depression, corruption, murder, perversion, addiction…need I go on?
Earth is waiting for us to discover who we are–KINGS! Kings that have access to the very nature of God. It is only when we truly submit will we bring His Kingdom (ways of Heaven) to Earth. Until then…Instead too many of us spit in God’s face as though He were the worst friend to have. We question Him, waving our fingers at Him, demanding He prove to us what we have no way of judging rightly even if He did answer. We presume to know His heart yet we scowl when He cries. God need not judge us. We ALL judge ourselves each day.
The most important thing right now is rebuilding Haiti and aiding the families that live there with all the love we can find. They need our help. So join me in my favorite prayer: Thy Kingdom Come–They Will be Done tonight in me, in Haiti, in every nation of this world as it is in Heaven.
We love you Haiti and so does the Lord. Arise!
