PAT ROBERTSON: AND WHY HE WAS WRONG

Category : Church & State, Politics

View Comments

That fact is–it was grossly presumptuous and downright insensitive for Pat Robertson to insinuate that Haiti’s history was the cause of Tuesday’s earthquake, especially while mothers, fathers, and children are still bleeding, buried alive under buildings or worse.  Here’s what he said:

“They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it’s a deal.”

“That island of Hispaniola is one island. It is cut down the middle; on the one side is Haiti on the other is the Dominican Republic,” he said. “Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island.

The whole notion originates from the fact that Haiti reportedly made some sort of pact with the devil to gain their independence as a nation. No doubt that Pat Robertsonhas had some spiritual consequences and most would agree isn’t the best way to start your history as a nation. If you believe your bible God Himself is quick to own up to His own jealousy. “Thou shalt have no God before me.” There are always consequences for any nation that may does so and doing so can look many different ways-not just through a literal ritual. Whether its America, Uganda, Europe, Brazil or the Middle East–in the areas where we walk away from Wisdom-we bear the burden of that decision–like when we pass corrupt laws that don’t line up with the Kingdom. I imagine every nation has some spot in their history where they’ve done this not just Haiti.

So what of this earthquake then? Why all these rumblings of payback? Chickens coming home to roost-right? I disagree. I think there is another reason for natural disasters worldwide, not just in Haiti. There is a scripture in the bible that says:

Romans 8:19-20

19For [even the whole] creation (all nature) waits expectantly and longs earnestly for God’s sons to be made known [waits for the revealing, the disclosing of their sonship].

20For the creation (nature) was subjected to frailty (to futility, condemned to frustration), not because of some intentional fault on its part, but by the will of Him Who so subjected it–[yet] with the hope

I really believe that mother earth, God’s creation is crying out for Man (God’s image on earth) to stand up and take dominion. What do I mean? The earth was given to Adam(Man) as a gift. She is ours to steward, to manage, to love, to subdue, to cultivate. She was designed for the sons of God. She was created for us to rule over her as kings. Until we do, like a stomach that twists and turns in hunger she too groans in discomfort, longing for food only her masters can provide. I believe the earthquake was not God’s judgment on Haiti. Instead–I believe its the earth judging her owners–the sons and daughters of the most High God. She’s asking: Where are you? I need you! Govern me. Families need you. The Spirit of God needs your participation if He is to bring His government to earth as originally intended. We should always pray for those in leadership over Haiti and every other nation. But we must also come to terms with the leaders we are called to be as individuals. Kingship starts with us.

Robertson also said:

They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to god and out of this tragedy I’m optimistic something good may come. But right now we are helping the suffering people and the suffering is unimaginable.”

AriseI had to address just one last thing. As it relates to Pagan or Devil Worship. If Haiti’s past is dark, is America’s any brighter? Is Haiti cursed for her pact but America not for sanctioning abortion? oops. Where do you draw the line? Every nation under the sun could stand to repent for her sin. Every nation. Each one has chosen a kingdom other than the one she was born to serve and obey at least once….(yes, I’m being sarcastic). So, the question remains: could Haiti’s sin have invited an earthquake? Did New Orleans’ sin invite Katrina? Did Asia the tsunami? Perhaps on some level it did but I think the church, corrupt government, etc. must share that responsibility. Ultimately God knows that answer-not me. Perhaps our failure to demonstrate the love, compassion and service of God in our families, communities, cities, nations and world has invited that dis-ease beneath the earth and above the sea. Perhaps our failure to submit to God’s rule has opened us all up to more than just earthquakes and tornadoes but sickness, poverty, depression, corruption, murder, perversion, addiction…need I go on?

Earth is waiting for us to discover who we are–KINGS! Kings that have access to the very nature of God. It is only when we truly submit will we bring His Kingdom (ways of Heaven) to Earth. Until then…Instead too many of us spit in God’s face as though He were the worst friend to have. We question Him, waving our fingers at Him, demanding He prove to us what we have no way of judging rightly even if He did answer. We presume to know His heart yet we scowl when He cries. God need not judge us. We ALL judge ourselves each day.

The most important thing right now is rebuilding Haiti and aiding the families that live there with all the love we can find. They need our help. So join me in my favorite prayer: Thy Kingdom Come–They Will be Done tonight in me, in Haiti, in every nation of this world as it is in Heaven.
We love you Haiti and so does the Lord. Arise!

Frankly, I think God is just acting on behalf of a people who no one else will help. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Why? Neglect by the rest of the world especially the US and its allies. Why? I have my suspicions (economics and racism), but part of it may well be because of the political relationship between the US and France. How would it have looked at the time when the US was seeking France's support for its own "freedom from England" for the US to have a policy of support for Haiti (blacks) which defeated France and its ideology of social democracy (or is it democratic socialism?). Bad politics. The US wasn't ready to give up plantation economics at such a critical point in its birth; nor prepared to support an "enemy" of France over the years.

I believe God is saying to us (not necessarily through the "disasters" but through the signs the disasters point to) that while France the US and Europe move ahead economically etc. that Haiti shouldn't be left in squalor and voodoo to be buffeted by evil spiritual forces. Especially since France and the rest of Europe has a long history with atheism and the occult as well and were quite likely instrumental in planting that seed of revolution and unchristian influence in Haiti.

Whether a deal with the devil or whatever else, we have all come short (actually, we've all made deals with the devil in some form or another). If Haiti as a nation needs to repent, so be it; but as Elijah's example teaches, those who oppose God and true freedom don't give up easily...stories from Haitian author Edwidge Danticat confirm this. Is the world ready to see Haiti at its worst and stay the course and get the job done in this area of spiritual warfare. We'll see how far foreign policy goes in 2010 and beyond.

Although Mr. Robertson could not prove that the particular earthquake was a result of the so-called pact that was held with the devil, and it was grossly insensitive of him to have brought it up at the time he did, the principle he espoused was sound, and even biblical. It is called the Principle of Representation. For all of us, we are held to the consequences of the actions of our forefathers. That is why the whole world was considered sinners because Adam sinned. He represented all of the human race. And that is why Christ could save us also, because he came as the second Adam. Moreover, that is why God promised to bless the Jews because of faithful Abraham. Actually, the principle is everywhere illustrated in and out of the Bible. So if indeed there was a pact, then Haiti will not escape its consequences until the pact is formally renounced by someone acting on its behalf.
Take a look at Haiti and its neighbor, Dominca Republic. Though both are side by side, the differences between the two are like day and night. Whereas DR is green and luscious, Haiti is withered and extremely poor. Frank devil worship is rampant in Haiti, but not so in DR. The GDP in DR is about $8000; for Haiti? $1000+.
So, while it is possible that Haiti could have indeed entered into a devilish pact, it was insensitive of Mr Robertson to have brought it up at this time. But again, we are not aware of the context in which he mentioned it. MSM is an expert in quoting people out of context.
  • Question!?
This is disturbing to me. I want to know who would have the authority to commit a whole country to the devil and what can we do as kingdom folk to take it back?

Great read. I agree with you and was just having the same conversation with a friend recently. I do really like some things about Pat Robertson, but he can regularly be waaaay off base sometimes - like in this case. As servants of Christ, our primary role is not to condemn and speculate as to why something like this has happened (things like this happen to "good" and "bad" people, but our primary role is how we respond. We must exhibit the love of Christ to these people and take our rightful place as sons and daughters of the Kingdom. This can and should be done in real, tangible ways such as prayer, food, medicine, shelter and just plain ole love. I believe if we position ourselves to serve as Christ did and ask God to move in supernatural ways, he will move and we will see miracles happen. In this respect, I agree with you and know that the biggest news about the Haiti earthquake should not be about the tragedy, but should be the way God's people responded and where Haiti will ultimately be in 5 to 10 years after God's people went to work. Thanks for letting me share.

Just insensitive or wrong? Who is the devil he is referring to? The "real" devil? Was it wrong for them to want freedom? Are you supposed to be punished for fighting for freedom? Pat Robertson was not just insensitive, he is wrong, unless he was there the day Haiti supposedly made this pact. And if he was there... in what capacity?
  • Wow! A great Kingdom perspective on the issue.

thank you for clarifying that, i was getting worried for my nation.
and great post, i figure even nations are subject to forgiveness from the Lord as a nation is only made up of its people and as long as they repent, their sins or the sins of their forefathers. so whether or not a pact was made the Lord is a forgiving God.
I don't even know how they let these random people speak on issues they dont fully grasp, i didnt even know who Pat Robertson was until i googled him

Hello Concerned Ugandan. Thank you so much for pointing this out. My mention of Uganda was not to site anything specific in Uganda's history that I know of. You could remove Uganda and insert Asia, or Iceland, Brazil, etc. (I made a few adjustments to reflect this) My intention was to show that no matter who we are, no matter the nation in question, we've all fallen short at some point in some way whether its passing corrupt laws, or making a blatant pact with the devil. It's always our intention to show honor. Yes--"For God and My Country". I hope this helps bring some clarity. All my love-Purple Sky and thanks again!

wow , beautiful perspective, and deeper than expected, I agree ... the world, in general, has become a poisoned place on so many levels- not just Haiti, but across the globe, God loves us all - and wants to heal all... His love is strong enough, if we'd only let him. - thanks for addressing this side of the news.
