Frankly, I think God is just acting on behalf of a people who no one else will help. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Why? Neglect by the rest of the world especially the US and its allies. Why? I have my suspicions (economics and racism), but part of it may well be because of the political relationship between the US and France. How would it have looked at the time when the US was seeking France's support for its own "freedom from England" for the US to have a policy of support for Haiti (blacks) which defeated France and its ideology of social democracy (or is it democratic socialism?). Bad politics. The US wasn't ready to give up plantation economics at such a critical point in its birth; nor prepared to support an "enemy" of France over the years.

I believe God is saying to us (not necessarily through the "disasters" but through the signs the disasters point to) that while France the US and Europe move ahead economically etc. that Haiti shouldn't be left in squalor and voodoo to be buffeted by evil spiritual forces. Especially since France and the rest of Europe has a long history with atheism and the occult as well and were quite likely instrumental in planting that seed of revolution and unchristian influence in Haiti.

Whether a deal with the devil or whatever else, we have all come short (actually, we've all made deals with the devil in some form or another). If Haiti as a nation needs to repent, so be it; but as Elijah's example teaches, those who oppose God and true freedom don't give up easily...stories from Haitian author Edwidge Danticat confirm this. Is the world ready to see Haiti at its worst and stay the course and get the job done in this area of spiritual warfare. We'll see how far foreign policy goes in 2010 and beyond.

Although Mr. Robertson could not prove that the particular earthquake was a result of the so-called pact that was held with the devil, and it was grossly insensitive of him to have brought it up at the time he did, the principle he espoused was sound, and even biblical. It is called the Principle of Representation. For all of us, we are held to the consequences of the actions of our forefathers. That is why the whole world was considered sinners because Adam sinned. He represented all of the human race. And that is why Christ could save us also, because he came as the second Adam. Moreover, that is why God promised to bless the Jews because of faithful Abraham. Actually, the principle is everywhere illustrated in and out of the Bible. So if indeed there was a pact, then Haiti will not escape its consequences until the pact is formally renounced by someone acting on its behalf.
Take a look at Haiti and its neighbor, Dominca Republic. Though both are side by side, the differences between the two are like day and night. Whereas DR is green and luscious, Haiti is withered and extremely poor. Frank devil worship is rampant in Haiti, but not so in DR. The GDP in DR is about $8000; for Haiti? $1000+.
So, while it is possible that Haiti could have indeed entered into a devilish pact, it was insensitive of Mr Robertson to have brought it up at this time. But again, we are not aware of the context in which he mentioned it. MSM is an expert in quoting people out of context.

This is disturbing to me. I want to know who would have the authority to commit a whole country to the devil and what can we do as kingdom folk to take it back?

Great read. I agree with you and was just having the same conversation with a friend recently. I do really like some things about Pat Robertson, but he can regularly be waaaay off base sometimes - like in this case. As servants of Christ, our primary role is not to condemn and speculate as to why something like this has happened (things like this happen to "good" and "bad" people, but our primary role is how we respond. We must exhibit the love of Christ to these people and take our rightful place as sons and daughters of the Kingdom. This can and should be done in real, tangible ways such as prayer, food, medicine, shelter and just plain ole love. I believe if we position ourselves to serve as Christ did and ask God to move in supernatural ways, he will move and we will see miracles happen. In this respect, I agree with you and know that the biggest news about the Haiti earthquake should not be about the tragedy, but should be the way God's people responded and where Haiti will ultimately be in 5 to 10 years after God's people went to work. Thanks for letting me share.

Just insensitive or wrong? Who is the devil he is referring to? The "real" devil? Was it wrong for them to want freedom? Are you supposed to be punished for fighting for freedom? Pat Robertson was not just insensitive, he is wrong, unless he was there the day Haiti supposedly made this pact. And if he was there... in what capacity?

thank you for clarifying that, i was getting worried for my nation.
and great post, i figure even nations are subject to forgiveness from the Lord as a nation is only made up of its people and as long as they repent, their sins or the sins of their forefathers. so whether or not a pact was made the Lord is a forgiving God.
I don't even know how they let these random people speak on issues they dont fully grasp, i didnt even know who Pat Robertson was until i googled him

Hello Concerned Ugandan. Thank you so much for pointing this out. My mention of Uganda was not to site anything specific in Uganda's history that I know of. You could remove Uganda and insert Asia, or Iceland, Brazil, etc. (I made a few adjustments to reflect this) My intention was to show that no matter who we are, no matter the nation in question, we've all fallen short at some point in some way whether its passing corrupt laws, or making a blatant pact with the devil. It's always our intention to show honor. Yes--"For God and My Country". I hope this helps bring some clarity. All my love-Purple Sky and thanks again!
