Haiti’s Relief: Is Our Money Enough?

Category : Culture, Your World

In the last week millions of dollars have been donated to help earthquake victims living in Haiti. At the time of this post UNICEF has raised $6 million, Singer Wyclef Jean’s organization Yele Haiti raised $2 million through online and text message donations but not without accusations of recent tax filings. The American Red Cross also took advantage of mobile giving. By texting “Haiti” to 90999 cell phone carriers automatically donate $10.00 on behalf of their customers. But savvy foundations and non-profit organizations aren’t the only ones rallying to raise funds. A Who’s Who of sports and entertainment celebs also contributed large donations to the cause including: PR pained Tiger Woods who gave $3 million and Oprah Winfrey’s Angel Network: $1 million. Even the presidents (Obama, Clinton and Bush) rallied to raise monies. But with all of the money raised several questions linger like a bad headache.Haiti's Faith

Where does the money go after we press send on our cell phones?
How is it administered?
How do we ensure accountability?
Will funds stay wrapped in red tape?
How is the oversight the same or different from the recent government bailouts?
Of the money raised: Did it make it to the families who needed it the most?
Will donations dry up once Haiti ceases to be trending topics on Twitter?

Family members and concerned global citizens who watch constant news coverage are experiencing extreme frustration as the clock ticks and loved ones continue to die “stupid” deaths–all because aid didn’t reach its final destination in time.

THE PURPLE SIDE

So, what is the answer? Is there a solution? I can’t help but wonder what Jesus would do if this happened in his day? Wouldn’t He simply just raise the dead the way he did back then? Heal broken bones and close the open wounds. I imagine He’d supersede all the governmental red tape. CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta would need not fear when the UN pulled their doctors out. Anderson Cooper would cover the day’s miracles instead of the day’s tragedies. And families would sing loudly and aftershocks would be silenced.

Are such miracles even possible in 2010 or are we consumed with doom, destruction and last days? Does a spiritual opportunity await those who truly believe? Sure would be nice if the sky was purple like that instead of this limiting blue. For those of you thinking–let’s be realistic I’ll agree that practical contingency plans still need be pursued for the next natural disaster that occurs. But maybe, just maybe we should blow the dust off our bibles and instead pursue a spiritual contingency plan. Believe that God didn’t crush Haiti but is longing to raise her up in every way. This purple way of providing relief could save Haiti. It still can save parts of Africa, Cambodia and more. Do you believe this is possible? Does the Purple Sky really exist?
