Is Your Cell Phone Fueling the Deadliest War in the World?

ENOUGHSo who knew?! I’m a geek right. And I love gadgets and things. I’m definitely a MAC, am itching for the new 4G iphone and have promised myself I won’t get too close to the ipad for fear I might fall in love for real. What I didn’t know was that the four minerals that go into cellphones, blackberrys, ipods and digital cameras are fueling the conflict in Eastern Congo- the deadliest since World War II and the most dangerous place to be a woman or a girl on planet earth. They are: Gold, Tantalum, Tungsten & Tin. They make our phones buzz and are used inside every cell phone and laptop.

So what can you do?

Create a demand for conflict free products by telling the companies who are fueling the conflict you want social justice. So which companies are using these minerals? Brands we all know, love and use:

Congolese Rebel Groups earn $100 Million a year raping women and enslaving children…

mining products we can’t live without. Five million are already dead so raise your voice. Visit Raise Hope For Congo and tell companies that if they take conflict minerals out of their products, only then will you buy them. You can also text the word CONGOPLEDGE to 228466 (Spells ACTION) or contact your congressman. Raise Hope for Congo is a campaign of Enough, an organization that focuses on crises in Sudan, eastern Congo, northern Uganda and other areas of Africa affected by the Lord’s Resistance Army. I hope this post challenges you as much as it has challenged me. If we want God’s kingdom (his way of doing things) on earth as it is in heaven we’ve got to find ways to create the products we need and want without committing crimes against ourselves…all so we can get our tweet and text on.

The use of conflict minerals by electronics companies such as Samsung, Motorola, Dell, Research in Motion, APPLE, Microsoft, etc. is something we can all agree needs to stop. These companies are aware of their use of these minerals. They have even joined associations who keep busy meeting and meeting and meeting and meeting and meeting and meeting, and then talking and talking and talking and talking and talking about change by none of them do it.

Even the United Nations has now started to finger the players involved noting them for their support of crimes and violence.

Educate yourself. Follow the progress. Support change.

Wow, how did i miss this one! This just really put a major damper on my love of gadgets. These major tech producers make billions of dollars and can afford to take up the social/humane responsibility of not using materials mined on the backs and the destructions of the lives of the poor people of the Congo. geez, man Africa just can't get a break.
